James Monroe

Hi there! Allow me to introduce myself. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and grew up playing sports at an early age from soccer to wrestling. At the age of 12 I was introduced to weight training, and not much later I began skateboarding and running long distance. Eventually, in my later teens, I began boxing, Muay thai kickboxing, and yoga. With all that experience in physical activity my philosophy is that we should enjoy and rely upon the bodies we inhabit through dancing, hiking, swimming, climbing, running, walking. Regardless of the activity, to move is to live and to live is to move!

My desire to share fitness with other people stems from having family members and close friends who struggled with creating healthy lifestyle habits and losing weight. After successfully helping those close to me, I knew I was meant to help my community get active and healthy.

Throughout my coaching career I have helped clients from many different backgrounds and experience levels lose body fat, gain muscle, and lead more active lifestyles. Through learned experience as well as copious amounts of research I have developed a systematic approach to introducing clients to strength training, mobility and range of motion development, cardiovascular conditioning, and applying nutrition concepts to their daily lives.

I have worked with a wide range of clients who have varying needs and abilities. My experience includes working with physique competitors pursuing body recomposition, athletes looking to develop better sports performance, boxers and kickboxers, people recovering from serious
injuries, clients with extreme muscle imbalances, individuals who need to lose over 100 lbs, and with ages ranging from eight to eighty years old.

Ultimately, your goal is my goal. The sessions we do will be concentrated but also fun and enjoyable. At the end of the day, I want you to hire me until you can go your own way after you have been empowered to continue your journey independently.

If you are reading this and are unsure of where or how to begin your fitness development, I highly recommend that you schedule a free consultation with me. You can reach me by text or phone at 503-484-6052 or email at coachjamesmonroe@gmail.com.

I hired James as a trainer after several failed attempts on my own and hiring other coaches. What made James different as a coach is he attacked the heart of the issue, which was my food choices and behavior. James taught me all about metabolism and nutrition science and instilled a new outlook on food. Now I have control over my eating and my weight. For 9 months we trained three days a week doing resistance training and boxing. I’m really grateful for James because I’m not an easy person to coach due to the car accident I was in that hospitalized me and had me in a wheelchair for six months. I had severe injuries on my spine, my hips and my knees and James found ways to improve my mobility and work around my injuries. I highly recommend choosing James as a coach, especially if you struggle with weight loss and have mobility issues.

James has been instrumental in my fitness journey, helping me achieve not only weight loss but also lasting lifestyle changes.
His approach goes beyond just workouts—he educated me on healthy eating, emphasized the importance of strength training, and made every session enjoyable. With his guidance, I’ve learned to focus on sustainable habits that have transformed my mindset and body. Plus, James’ friendly, fun personality makes every session feel more like hanging out with a friend than working out. Training with him twice a week has truly made a positive impact on my life in more ways than one, but without him, I wouldn’t have been able to lose 25+ lbs (and more to come!!)

At the end of 2023, I was morbidly obese. I dealt with nonstop joint pain, I had hyper obstructive sleep apnea, I could only be outside on my feet for minutes at a time before I’d be exhausted, and I had a slew of permanent health complications like diabetes on the horizon if nothing
changed. I needed to become more active and manage my diet in order to save my own life.

And so I did, but the going was slow, and the motivation to stick to it was fragile. Knowing what to do when you were previously so sedentary is difficult, and the overflow of fitness and diet information out there was near impossible for me to process effectively. Results came but at a
snail’s pace. I needed some help, and so I started training with James, which was among the best decisions I have ever made.

James made the entire process simple to understand and transactable. Not only did he push me as hard as I possibly could be pushed during our boxing sessions, but he provided clear diet, cardio, and resistance training guidance for outside of our sessions as well. He would work with me on my form for any lifts that were giving me trouble so I stayed uninjured. He kept tabs on my progress, and frequently made suggestions for how to progress further or modify my training as my strength and endurance improved. All I came to him with was a desire to improve my health and a willingness to work hard, and I’m now down over 120 pounds and easily in the best shape of my life. I can’t thank him enough.
